In a rush and trying to buy a decent telescope for a beginner this Christmas? I’d still recommend you read my articles or the page here on telescopes for beginners but if you are really keen to cut to the chase on some recommendations, here are my picks for Christmas: Please note if you live outside the US you might find these scopes are not shipped to your country, in Australia for instance you would be best to talk to a local supplier like Telescope.com.au. You can however get the budding astronomer some amazing Astronomy Books and DVDs shipped to Australia at prices that cannot be beaten. With exchange rates as they are and no GST on imports of up to A$1,000 its never been a better time to get Astronomy Books from Amazon for Australians! If you live in or near a city, have limited storage room or need a telescope to just grab and use on a whim I’d recommend a refractor of up to 90mm aperture: If you live in a good dark sky location or are going to travel there often with your telescope, I’d recommend a reflector of up to 130mm: If on the other [...]

Update: The Starseeker appears to be out of production but Celestron’s Nexstar 130 SLT is as popular as ever and very competitively priced from Amazon; Amazon.com Widgets You don’t have to know the constellations to locate celestial objects with a StarSeeker GoTo telescope. This high-tech 130mm reflector telescope incorporates the latest computerized object-locating technology, which points the scope automatically to any of 4,000+ astronomical objects in its database! It will then track that object for you until you are ready to move on to something else. The 130mm-diameter parabolic mirror gathers 30% more light than the 114mm model to see deeper into space. Its short focal length allows the wide field of view and nice bright images. The set includes the telescope, mount and tripod, two 1.25″ Kellner eyepieces, and a red-dot finder scope to aid in the initial alignment. The illuminated hand controller allows movement at up to 4 degrees per second.

We see so many people searching for cheap telescopes but do they really know what they are letting themselves in for? Unfortunately when it comes to telescopes ‘cheap’ all too often equals ‘cheap and nasty’. There are so many light plastic scopes on the market it’s just not funny. They come on lightweight tripods (can’t really justify calling them mounts) and are likely to let yo see just about nothing! Even lunar views are difficult as the light tripods and lightweight tubes shake and vibrate so much. Needless to say the eyepieces these cheapies come with are rubbish too. Those cheap telescopes you see at department stores should be avoided at any price. They are made of inferior materials and are so hard to get a focus on anything with, that they will only turn you off your budding interest in astronomy. It is incredibly frustrating seeing well meaning parents buy these things for children. You just know the poor kid will lose interest rapidly. By talking to someone knowledgeable they could actually have a much better telescope for not a geat deal more in price. Its largely the same with the cheap telescopes you see on ebay. Steer clear [...]
